Did Jesus really die on a Cross?

What comes to your mind when you hear the term "Cross"? A device used for executing Jesus Christ? Many believe that Jesus was hanged on a Cross. A deeper and sincere investigation about the origin of Cross will help you to find out the real truth behind the matter. Did Jesus really die on a Cross?

The Classical Greek word used for Cross was 'Stauros' (word  'Xylon' was also used) which could merely denote an upright pale or a straight stake. The Bible translators however, later used the term Cross based on certain assumptions and misbeliefs prevailed during those times. Lets see what some relevant sources say about cross?

The Imperial Bible-Dictionary acknowledges this, saying: “The Greek word for cross, [stau·ros′], properly signified a stake, an upright pole, or piece of paling, on which anything might be hung, or which might be used in impaling [fencing in] a piece of ground. . . . Even amongst the Romans the crux (from which our cross is derived) appears to have been originally an upright pole.”—Edited by P. Fairbairn (London, 1874), Vol. I, p. 376.

A Greek-English Lexicon, by Liddell and Scott, defines this as meaning: “Wood cut and ready for use, firewood, timber, etc. . . . piece of wood, log, beam, post . . . cudgel, club . . . stake on which criminals were impaled . . . of live wood, tree.”

The book The Non-Christian Cross, by J. D. Parsons (London, 1896), says: “There is not a single sentence in any of the numerous writings forming the New Testament, which, in the original Greek, bears even indirect evidence to the effect that the stauros used in the case of Jesus was other than an ordinary stauros; much less to the effect that it consisted, not of one piece of timber, but of two pieces nailed together in the form of a cross. . . . It is not a little misleading upon the part of our teachers to translate the word stauros as ‘cross’ when rendering the Greek documents of the Church into our native tongue, and to support that action by putting ‘cross’ in our lexicons as the meaning of stauros without carefully explaining that that was at any rate not the primary meaning of the word in the days of the Apostles, did not become its primary signification till long afterwards, and became so then, if at all, only because, despite the absence of corroborative evidence, it was for some reason or other assumed that the particular stauros upon which Jesus was executed had that particular shape.”—Pp. 23, 24; see also The Companion Bible (London, 1885), Appendix No. 162.

“Various objects, dating from periods long anterior to the Christian era, have been found, marked with crosses of different designs, in almost every part of the old world. India, Syria, Persia and Egypt have all yielded numberless examples . . . The use of the cross as a religious symbol in pre-Christian times and among non-Christian peoples may probably be regarded as almost universal, and in very many cases it was connected with some form of nature worship.”—Encyclopædia Britannica (1946), Vol. 6, p. 753.

“The shape of the [two-beamed cross] had its origin in ancient Chaldea, and was used as the symbol of the god Tammuz (being in the shape of the mystic Tau, the initial of his name) in that country and in adjacent lands, including Egypt. By the middle of the 3rd cent. A.D. the churches had either departed from, or had travestied, certain doctrines of the Christian faith. In order to increase the prestige of the apostate ecclesiastical system pagans were received into the churches apart from regeneration by faith, and were permitted largely to retain their pagan signs and symbols. Hence the Tau or T, in its most frequent form, with the cross-piece lowered, was adopted to stand for the cross of Christ.”—An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words (London, 1962), W. E. Vine, p. 256.
“It is strange, yet unquestionably a fact, that in ages long before the birth of Christ, and since then in lands untouched by the teaching of the Church, the Cross has been used as a sacred symbol. . . . The Greek Bacchus, the Tyrian Tammuz, the Chaldean Bel, and the Norse Odin, were all symbolised to their votaries by a cruciform device.”—The Cross in Ritual, Architecture, and Art (London, 1900), G. S. Tyack, p. 1.

“The cross in the form of the ‘Crux Ansata’ . . . was carried in the hands of the Egyptian priests and Pontiff kings as the symbol of their authority as priests of the Sun god and was called ‘the Sign of Life.’”—The Worship of the Dead (London, 1904), Colonel J. Garnier, p. 226.

“Various figures of crosses are found everywhere on Egyptian monuments and tombs, and are considered by many authorities as symbolical either of the phallus [a representation of the male sex organ] or of coition. . . . In Egyptian tombs the crux ansata [cross with a circle or handle on top] is found side by side with the phallus.”—A Short History of Sex-Worship (London, 1940), H. Cutner, pp. 16, 17; see also The Non-Christian Cross, p. 183.

“These crosses were used as symbols of the Babylonian sun-god, and are first seen on a coin of Julius Cæsar, 100-44 B.C., and then on a coin struck by Cæsar’s heir (Augustus), 20 B.C. On the coins of Constantine the most frequent symbol is ; but the same symbol is used without the surrounding circle, and with the four equal arms vertical and horizontal; and this was the symbol specially venerated as the ‘Solar Wheel’. It should be stated that Constantine was a sun-god worshipper, and would not enter the ‘Church’ till some quarter of a century after the legend of his having seen such a cross in the heavens.”—The Companion Bible, Appendix No. 162; see also The Non-Christian Cross, pp. 133-141.

All these sources prove that Cross had a pagan origin and was not used for executing Jesus Christ. Rather Christ was hanged on a stake or an upright pale. Though, the Bible translators preferred to use the word "Cross", many scriptures in the Bible however prove that Jesus was killed on a stake.

The King James Version reads at Acts 5:30: “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree [xy′lon].” Other versions, though rendering stauros′ as “cross,” also translate xy′lon as “tree.” At Acts 13:29 The Jerusalem Bible says of Jesus: “When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from the tree [xy′lon] and buried him.”

The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures uses the expression “torture stake” at Matthew 27:40-42 and in other places where the word stauros′ appears. Similarly, the Complete Jewish Bible uses the expression “execution stake.”

Is God a Trinity?

Many people believe that God is a trinity. But, such claims contradicts with the Bible's teaching about the true God. Neither Jesus nor his apostles nor any of the inspired writers of the Bible used the term "Trinity" or recorded any portions in the Bible which imparts the trinity doctrine.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of the readers to examine the truth about God from the Bible. What does the Bible teach about God?

Before, we discuss in detail let us consider what is the definition of the term "Trinity". According to the Athanasian Creed, there are three divine Persons (the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost), each said to be eternal, each said to be almighty, none greater or less than another, each said to be God, and yet together being but one God. In short Trinity refers to " Three in One God".

Can we find such a teaching in the holy Bible? Of course not! The Bible on the contrary talks about the Only true God, Jehovah. Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 4 says "Listen, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah."* Jesus Christ, while he was on earth quoted the mentioned scripture at Mark 12:29. He never criticised the scripture mentioned at the Old testament or corrected the fact about God, rather acknowledged that it is Jehovah who alone is the true God.

While praying to his heavenly father Jesus says at John 17:3 "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of YOU, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ". Jesus here mentioned the difference between the Only true God and himself. He said that it is the Father (Jehovah) who is the Only true God and he (Jesus) was sent to earth by the true God. Jesus thus distinct himself from being the Only true God and never taught about the trinity doctrine.

What did the first century Christians teach about God? Lets consider what the Apostle Paul wrote about God. He says at 1 Corinthians 8:5 " For even though there are those who are called “gods,” whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many “gods” and many “lords,” there is actually to us one God the Father". So, its evident that the first century Christians viewed God as Only one who is the Father.

Even Satan knows that God is Only One. The book of James 2:19 states "You believe there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder." So, the scriptures well explains the fact that God is Only one and is not a Trinity.

Who is the Father, Son and Holy spirit?

The Father is the Creator of all living and non living things. He is the Source of all life. He is the supreme in knowledge, experience, wisdom, power and authority. The Bible also reveals the personal name of the Almighty God. God himself revealed his name at Isaiah 42: 8, where he says "I am Jehovah. That is my name; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images." The name Jehovah (YHWH in Hebrew) appeared more than 7000 times when the Bible was written. No doubt, the Bible manifest Jehovah as the most high. The King James version at Psalms 83:17,18 says "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth."

The Son is the first creation of God who had a beginning. Jesus Christ who was then known as "the Word" was created directly by God himself. Colossians 1:15 says "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation". The book of Revelation mentions Jesus as "the beginning of God's creation" where Jehovah never had a beginning ( Revelation 3:14, Psalms 90:2). Jesus is not equal to God in power, knowledge, wisdom, experience and authority ( John 14:28b, Mathew 24:36, 20:20-23). 1 Corinthians 11: 3 says " the head of Christ is God". Jesus will remain submissive to God's authority forever.( 1 Corinthians 15: 27,28)

Holy spirit is not identified as a person, rather it is said to be God's active force or power. The angel Gabriel while talking to Mary said "Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you"(Luke 1:35). Holy spirit is spoken of as ‘filling’ people; they can be ‘baptized’ with it; and they can be “anointed” with it ( Luke 1:41, Mathew 3:11, Acts 10:38). There is no reference in the Bible where it is said that the Holy spirit literally spoke to some one or any human offered prayer to it. It is used in the creation of the universe and to inspire Bible writers. Jehovah is the owner of the holy spirit and he uses it to accomplish his divine purposes.(Psalms 104:30, 2 peter 1:21, Acts 4:31)

In short

Father (Jehovah God) -  Almighty, Creator, who only deserves all worship
Son ( Jesus Christ )      -  Mighty, submissive to God, First born of all creation.
Holy spirit (No name)  -  Active force of God, not a person,

Revelation 1:1 says "A revelation by Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to show his slaves the things that must shortly take place. And he sent forth his angel and presented [it] in signs through him to his slave John"

What can we learn from this scripture? It emphasises the divine hierarchy not trinity. The scriptures say that God gave the revelation to Jesus Christ and Jesus to Angel and Angel to Man. Again it is Jehovah God who is the supreme head and Jesus, Angels and Man are sub ordinates. This scripture totally disapprove the doctrine of Trinity as taught by todays so-called priests and churches.

It is true that some of the scriptures in the Bible put together Father, Son and Holy spirit in one verse. That doesn't mean that they are One. The Bible put together Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and same is also with Peter, James and John. Will you reach the conclusion that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are One?

Origin of Trinity

The doctrine of trinity was inculcated into Christianity at the Council of Nicea in 325 CE headed by Constantine, the Roman emperor. The below are some of quotes from some secular authorities.

The New Encyclopædia Britannica says: “Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord’ (Deu 6:4). . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies. . . . By the end of the 4th century . . . the doctrine of the Trinity took substantially the form it has maintained ever since.”—(1976), Micropædia, Vol. X, p. 126.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “The formulation ‘one God in three Persons’ was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, prior to the end of the 4th century. But it is precisely this formulation that has first claim to the title the Trinitarian dogma. Among the Apostolic Fathers, there had been nothing even remotely approaching such a mentality or perspective.”—(1967), Vol. XIV, p. 299.

In The Encyclopedia Americana we read: “Christianity derived from Judaism and Judaism was strictly Unitarian [believing that God is one person]. The road which led from Jerusalem to Nicea was scarcely a straight one. Fourth century Trinitarianism did not reflect accurately early Christian teaching regarding the nature of God; it was, on the contrary, a deviation from this teaching.”—(1956), Vol. XXVII, p. 294L.

According to the Nouveau Dictionnaire Universel, “The Platonic trinity, itself merely a rearrangement of older trinities dating back to earlier peoples, appears to be the rational philosophic trinity of attributes that gave birth to the three hypostases or divine persons taught by the Christian churches. . . . This Greek philosopher’s [Plato, fourth century B.C.E.] conception of the divine trinity . . . can be found in all the ancient [pagan] religions.”—(Paris, 1865-1870), edited by M. Lachâtre, Vol. 2, p. 1467.

John L. McKenzie, S.J., in his Dictionary of the Bible, says: “The trinity of persons within the unity of nature is defined in terms of ‘person’ and ‘nature’ which are G[ree]k philosophical terms; actually the terms do not appear in the Bible. The trinitarian definitions arose as the result of long controversies in which these terms and others such as ‘essence’ and ‘substance’ were erroneously applied to God by some theologians.”—(New York, 1965), p. 899.

From these quotes, we can come to the conclusion that the doctrine of Trinity was not introduced to man by Almighty God, Jesus or any of the gospel writers. The doctrine was originated from man made philosophies and is against Bible truths. Moreover, the emperor Constantine was not inspired by God to write any part of the books in the Bible. If God wanted us to believe in a trinity he would have taught us through the pages of the Bible.

So, let us reject the pagan teaching of the Trinity. A careful examination of the holy scriptures would help us to agree with what Jesus Christ told about God at Mathew 4:10

"Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service."

Origin of Jehovah's Witnesses

There is a misconception that Jehovah's Witnesses are a new sect. But, to find out the origin let us first consider what does it mean to be a witness. The Theological Dictionary of the new testament says: "the concept of witness is used both in the sense of witness to ascertainable facts and also in that of witness to truth i.e. the making known and confessing of convictions". So, a witness proclaims views or truths of what he is convinced. According to the scriptures, the first known witness is said to be Abel (second son of Adam and Eve). Of whom was he a witness?

Hebrews 11:4 in the holy Bible states "By faith Abel offered God a sacrifice of greater worth than Cain, through which [faith] he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing witness respecting his gifts; and through it he, although he died, yet speaks". So, Abel is said to be a witness of God. Of which God was he a witness? Definitely, he should have been a witness of the true God i.e. the creator mentioned in the Bible. Why should we consider the Bible to find out the true God?

The first five books of the Bible (Pentateuch) dates back to 1513 BC which is the oldest religious text the world has ever seen. This prompts us to look into the Bible in our search for God.  According to Jeremiah Chapter 10:10 Jehovah is said to be the "True God". Also, John 17:3 says that he is the "Only true God". God himself revealed his name to Moses as recorded at Exodus 3:15, says "This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘JEHOVAH the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name to time indefinite, and this is the memorial of me to generation after generation". The book of Malachi 3:6 assures us that Jehovah will never change. So, right from the beginning till now and for ever Jehovah will remain the true God.

Why did Jehovah need a witness? Satan has propagated many lies and distorted facts about the true God Jehovah. Some such misconceptions are hell fire, trinity, immortality of the soul, fate, God is cruel and responsible for all injustice and suffering. God's right to rule was  questioned at the garden of Eden. Man's integrity in worshipping the true God was also challenged during the days of Job. The truth about these accusations and issues has to be manifested and for that Jehovah needs witnesses. Abel was the first individual who stood on Jehovah's side and bore witness for him by his faith. Then comes a long list of names mentioned at Hebrews 11, such as Hanoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Rehab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jeph′thah, David as well as Samuel and the other prophets.

Most surprising thought is that even Jesus is said to be a faithful and true witness of Jehovah (Revelation 1:5, 3:14). Also, Hebrews 12:1 says about a great cloud of witnesses. Jehovah calls people who want to be on his side and bear witness for him as his witnesses.(Isaiah 43:10-12) The first century Christians and Jesus himself were called by Jehovah's name. ( John 17:11b, Acts 15:14) The meaning of the name "Jesus" ( Hebrew-'Yehoshua' ) is "Jehovah is salvation". In his model prayer, Jesus himself asked his disciples to pray for the sanctification of God's name.(Mathew 6:9)

The holy Bible talks about the restoration of Jehovah's people which would take place during the final part of the days. Isaiah 2: 2-4 well describes the establishment of Jehovah's Organisation during the last days and many would stream into it. The scriptures also mentions that these people who are trained by Jehovah will not practice war anymore. Is the fulfilment of this prophecy come true?

Certainly. Jehovah's Witnesses today are known by Jehovah's name. They have restored the usage of God's name in the Bible ( New World Translation published by Jehovah's Witnesses ) and even encourage others to sanctify Jehovah's divine name. They are wide spread in more that 239 Countries and Islands. They are united around the world and such unity is bonded with love and self sacrificing spirit. People who live in enemy countries are even trained to become friends. Despite national, ethnical, cultural and political barriers they live as a united family.

The witnesses  are well known for their door to door preaching activity. They play a significant role in spreading the good news of God's Kingdom world wide by fulfilling the commandment mentioned at Mathew 24:14. Their publications are translated into 600 languages. The Watchtower and Awake! magazines published by Jehovah's Witnesses are the most widely circulated religious magazine in human history and they hold a place in the Guinness book of world records. They have  111,719 Congregations  worldwide and 19,000,000 people attend their meetings or conventions.

Yes, Jehovah's Witnesses are indeed a modern day miracle who are united by love and unity world wide. They are not a modern sect. They existed throughout mankind's history i.e. from Abel's days.
